Artist's Profile: Bob Thau - Blue Ribbon Carver

A life-long resident of the Chesapeake Bay area, Bob Thau brings to his carvings
of shorebirds and ducks the authenticity of a seasoned observer of wildlife,
and an appreciation of the fragile beauty of the wetlands.

As a boy, Bob experienced the unspoiled beauty of the Bay while exploring its waterways,
marshes and surrounding woodlands. He tagged along on the hunting and fishing expeditions
of his “Uncle” Al and his cronies. Their tales of the old time waterman and outlaw gunners
instilled in Bob a deep interest in the unique history of the Chesapeake,
its people and wildlife.
As an adult, Bob briefly worked on land as a civil engineer, but his love of the Bay
lured him back to a life on the water. As the captain of the Seahawk II, Bob crabbed
and oystered for almost twenty years. By chance, his mother gave him a small carved bird
as a gift in 1987, and his attempts to reproduce it eventually led to a new love – carving –
and a desire to recreate in wood the birds and ducks of the Chesapeake Bay.

Bob is now a full time carver and a blue ribbon winner. He works in a shop on the back
of his Stevensville, Maryland, property, ably assisted by his Weimaraner dogs,
which serve as his companions and critics, and remind him to take occasional breaks.
